What to leave out for your dog when you'll be home late

When plans run long, your dog needs four things covered: water, a bathroom plan, something to do, and a calm place to rest. Set these up before you leave, not after you're already stuck.

1. Water they can't knock over

A spill-proof or weighted bowl means a full day of water even if your dog is a bowl-flipper. Leave a second bowl in another room as a backup.

Look for: spill-proof water bowl

2. A bathroom plan

For a few extra hours, a trusted neighbor with a key is the best option. For puppies and seniors, indoor pee pads in a set spot help.

Look for: pee pads

3. Something to work on

A busy dog is a calm dog. Food puzzles and stuffable toys turn a meal into 20–30 minutes of work.

  • Puzzle feeder — dog puzzle feeder
  • Stuffable rubber toy, filled and frozen the night before — stuffable chew toy
  • Lick mat with a smear of plain yogurt or pumpkin — lick mat

Only leave chews and toys your dog has already used safely while you watched. Skip anything small enough to swallow.

4. A calm place to rest

A familiar bed away from windows cuts down on barking at passersby. White noise or a radio masks outside sounds.

Look for: orthopedic or calming dog bed · white noise machine
